How Many Boxes Do I Need for Moving? A Calculator by Home Size

Running out of boxes the night before a move is one of the most common ways a packing plan falls apart. Buying far too many is almost as frustrating. The good news is that box counts follow a fairly predictable pattern, and once you know how many rooms you are packing and how full they are, you can get close to the right number on the first trip to the store.

This guide gives you a quick answer by home size, a room-by-room calculator, and the box sizes each part of the house actually needs. The estimates are planning ranges built room by room, the same way our movers in Tampa size up a home during a walkthrough, from studio apartments to four-bedroom houses with a full garage.

Quick Answer: Moving Boxes by Home Size

For an average household, a studio usually needs about 19 to 25 boxes, and a one-bedroom about 26 to 34. Two bedrooms land around 36 to 48 boxes. A three-bedroom house with a garage typically needs 54 to 72, and a four-bedroom house 65 to 89. Collectors, big kitchens, and anyone who has lived in the same home for a decade or more should plan for the high end of each range.

Which Box Sizes You Actually Need

A good box plan is mostly about matching weight to size. Heavy things go in small boxes so every box stays liftable, and light, bulky things go in large boxes so you are not paying for extra cardboard.

    • Small boxes: books, tools, canned food, files, and anything dense.
    • Medium boxes: kitchen items, toys, decor, lamp bases, and folded clothes.
    • Large boxes: bedding, pillows, towels, lampshades, and sports gear.
    • Dish packs: heavy-walled boxes made for plates and glasses.
    • Wardrobe boxes: tall boxes with a hanging bar, so clothes go from the closet rod straight in.

If you only buy one size, make it medium. Most households use more small and medium boxes than large ones, which is why the table above tilts that way.

    What Changes Your Box Count

    • How long you have lived there. Homes fill up over time, especially closets, garages, and attics.
    • The kitchen. A fully stocked kitchen is often the single biggest room for boxes.
    • Collections. Books, records, craft supplies, and holiday decorations can double a room’s count.
    • The garage and shed. Tools, hardware, and outdoor gear add up quickly.
    • Downsizing. Sorting before you pack means fewer boxes and a smaller truck.

    Tape, Paper, and Other Supplies

Plan on roughly one roll of packing tape for every 12 boxes, since each box needs its bottom and top taped well. Add a stack of packing paper for anything fragile, two or three markers for labeling, and a few rolls of stretch wrap if you want drawers and doors held shut. Label every box on the side, not just the top, so it can be read when boxes are stacked.

A Tampa Tip: Humidity and Cardboard

In Tampa’s summer humidity, cardboard softens and loses strength, especially sitting on a garage floor or in storage. Keep packed boxes off bare concrete, and use sealed plastic bins for documents, photos, and anything you would hate to see get damp. Our packing tips for Tampa heat and humidity go deeper on this.

    Which Box for What?

The right box size matters as much as the count. Search an item or filter by room to see which box it goes in, and how to pack it.

    • Books

      Small box

Books get heavy fast. Keep each box liftable and pack spines down. More in our guide to packing books for a move.

    • Plates and glasses

      Dish pack

Wrap each piece and stand plates on edge. Fill gaps with crumpled paper so nothing shifts.

    • Pots, pans, and small appliances

      Medium box

Nest pans with paper between them, and tape appliance cords to the appliance.

    • Pantry food and cans

      Small box

Canned goods are dense, so use small boxes and use up open items before move day.

    • Hanging clothes

      Wardrobe box

Move clothes straight from the closet rod to the box bar, hangers and all.

    • Folded clothes

      Medium box

Dresser drawers can often stay packed if the dresser is sturdy. Ask your crew before you empty them.

    • Bedding, pillows, and towels

      Large box

Light and bulky items fill large boxes without making them heavy. Pack one set of sheets per bed in your first-night box.

    • Jewelry

      Carry it yourself

Keep valuables with you, not on the truck. See our tips on packing jewelry for moving.

    • Lamps and lampshades

      Medium and large

Pack lamp bases in medium boxes, and nest shades inside a large box with nothing heavy on top.

    • Picture frames and art

      Picture box

Wrap each frame and pack them standing up, never flat under other boxes.

    • Files and paperwork

      Small box or plastic bin

In Tampa's humidity, important documents and photos are safer in a sealed plastic bin. More in our heat and humidity packing tips.

    • TV and electronics

Original box if you have it

Photograph cable setups before you unplug them, and bag remotes and cords with each device.

    • Toys and games

      Medium box

Bag small pieces by set, and keep one box of favorites open for the first few days.

    • Hand tools and hardware

      Small box

Tools are heavy. Bag screws and bolts by project and label each bag.

    • Sports and outdoor gear

      Large box

Balls, pads, and pool toys are light, so they fill large boxes well.

    • Paint, fuel, and cleaners

      Do not pack

Flammable and hazardous liquids cannot ride on a moving truck. Use them up or dispose of them properly.

    • Dining table leaves and chairs

      Pads, not boxes

Table leaves and chairs get wrapped in moving pads. See how to pack a dining table for moving.

    • Shoes

      Medium box

Stuff shoes with paper so they keep their shape, and pair them with a rubber band.
